The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks an outstanding individual to assist in the engineering and systems engineering of a new ocean observing project at the Institution. This NSF-funded project is starting its 5-year design and build phase. Operation of the infrastructure is planned for 25-30 years. This appointment will be made to the senior technical staff in the Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering to the Senior Engineer level. The position is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.
Responsibilities Duties of the Systems Engineer will include:
- Develop requirements for systems and subsystems starting from science questions and flowing down to hardware capabilities.
- Work with the entire OOI engineering team to define interfaces and interface requirements between subsystems.
- Organize engineering efforts to verifiably meet performance and interface requirements.
- Liaise between Engineers and Scientists in support of the OOI CGSN design, development, build, test, installation and operations and maintenance.
- Support Project Scientists in specific site selections.
- Work within the science community to promote the OOI system.
Experience The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of the complete lifecycle of products. Direct experience, working with oceanographic instrumentation or equipment, in design, development, prototype and test is required. System test and deployment experience is essential. Experience with definition of performance and interface requirements would be a plus. Experience with operation of remotely fielded equipment, instrumentation and/or sensors, is desired. Experience directing and evaluating the work of others is desired. Oceanographic cruise experience would be a plus.
Ability to work with a team of research scientists and engineers, some at remote sites, is imperative. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required. Experience as a supervisor and as a coordinator of team effort is required. Familiarity with best commercial practices (e.g. CMMI methodology) and DOORS software is a plus.
Desired Requirements and Qualifications Senior Engineer: Ph.D. in related engineering field, or Master's degree in an engineering or appropriate field with several years of related experience, or Bachelor's degree in an engineering or appropriate field with more than five years of related experience. All candidates must possess demonstrated excellence within a related field, i.e., a record of superior accomplishment-such as patents, publications, or documented instrumentation or systems--which provides objective evidence of original professional contributions and/or exceptional management skills. PhD in an oceanographic field is a considerable advantage.
WHOI is sensitive to the issues of dual career candidates and will work with applicants to address them.
