The Physical Oceanography Department is searching for an Engineering Assistant I or II. This is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.
Specific Duties to be performed:
Measuring, cutting and splicing line Measuring and terminating wire rope for moored applications Measuring and cutting chain Preparation of buoys Maintenance of deck handling gear Sandblasting/ sanding/scraping and painting Assembling hardware for field experiments Assembling glass ball buoyancy Maintenance of mooring winches Possible opportunities to occasionally go to sea
Education desired: High School or equivalent plus a minimum of one year mechanical experience, or technical school training beyond high school level. Applicants are expected to have a basic understanding of and facility with common practical skills related to their area of work.
Experience desired: Experience with hand and power tools. Mechanical assembly experience required. Splicing experience helpful, but willing to train. Experience working in a marine environment and or with equipment deployed in the marine environment. Experience with the repair and maintenance of electric/hydraulic and pneumatic winch systems preferred.
Special Qualifications:
Successful candidate must be detail oriented. Basic computer skills are required. Ability to document work is critical. Must be able to read and follow detailed instructions carefully. This position requires the ability to stand, walk, lift (up to 50 lbs), carry (up to 40 lbs), manual dexterity and exposure to grease, oils, electrical/mechanical/power equipment and all types of weather. Must be able to work with Personal Protective Equipment including full face mask respirator.
