Job TitleEngineering Assistant III - Winch Pool Coordinator
Description

The Shipboard Scientific Services Group (SSSG) is seeking an Engineering Assistant III - Winch Pool Coordinator to oversee the operation of the east coast, shared-use winch pool including the maintenance, scheduling and procedures for all of the assets within the pool. The individual selected will be expected to perform with a minimum of supervision. This individual will also provide support to SSSG operations in the areas of cruise planning, equipment mobilization/demobilization and instrument deployment. This position may require two to six weeks of time at sea per year.  This is a regular, full-time position and is benefits eligible.

Specific Duties Performed: Schedule the allocation of shared-use, pool winch assets within the UNOLS fleet. Maintain pool winches and wire handling equipment including long core davits and traction winches. Establish a preventative maintenance program for winch pool assets, provide annual recommendations for equipment upgrades, purchases and major overhauls for inclusion in the yearly proposal. This position requires both hands-on servicing of equipment as well as the ability to oversee the subcontracting of services from both within and outside the institution. Supervise any other staff that are supporting the winch pool operation. Review and maintain compliance records to appendix B of the Research Vessel Safety Standards. Provide logistics and shipping support of equipment to other institutions. Perform periodic at-sea support for winches and line handling equipment. Provide support to SSSG in the area of cruise planning and cruise logistics.

Education/Experience Desired: Associates degree in a mechanical field preferred. High School or Technical school training plus six years of related experience will be considered. Experience at sea is highly desirable. Time at sea may be scheduled during nontraditional work hours, including holidays and weekends.  Research Vessels have confined living and working spaces with narrow passageways.  Research Vessels may travel to any extremes of climate conditions. Familiarity with electrical motors, hydraulics, welding and mechanical shop practices is required.

This position requires the candidate to be able to lift up to 50 lbs independently, have depth perception and ability to hear voices over ambient deck machinery, frequent prolonged standing/walking, manual dexterity and occasional bending, stooping, kneeling and crouching, also exposure to inclement weather, excessive heat/cold and exposure to hazardous machinery.
