The Scientific Ship Services Group (SSSG) is searching for an Engineering Assistant III to join their team. This is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.
Job Summary:
Provide at-sea electronic and mechanical technical support for science programs utilizing WHOI ships. The individual selected will be expected to perform with a minimum of supervision, tackling non-routine assignments on his or her own initiative.
SPECIFIC DUTIES PERFORMED: Installation, maintenance, calibration and operation of shared use science equipment provided with Woods Hole's research vessels. This includes the following: data logging and display computers, Ethernet network electronics, navigation instruments, echo sounding/bottom profiling sonar systems, acoustic beacons and transponders, acoustic current profilers, meteorological, sea surface, and water column parameter sensors, sensor interface hardware and electronics, and various radio and satellite communications systems.
Mobilization, assembly and deployment of heavy oceanographic instruments from a ship’s deck. Light rigging and wire termination, both mechanical and electrical. Cruise logistics, including shipping, receiving and tracking of scientific equipment.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
B.S. in a technical field preferred. High school or Technical school training plus six years related experience will be considered. Experience at sea highly desirable. The ability to work cooperatively with the ship personnel and cruise scientific investigators is essential. Experience with the operation and maintenance of personal computers is required. Familiarity with computer programming (Windows and UNIX operating systems) and related equipment interfacing is desirable.
THIS IS A PHYSICALLY DEMANDING, SEA-GOING POSITION, AND REQUIRES APPROXIMATELY 8 MONTHS PER YEAR ABOARD RESEARCH VESSELS. MUST BE ABLE TO PASS THE EQUIVALENT OF AN ANTARCTIC MEDICAL EXAM.
Must be able to obtain TWIC Card.
