Description

The Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department is searching for an Engineering Assistant II/III to join their team. This is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.

Education and experience will determine level of hire.

JOB SUMMARY:

With some supervision, applies a broad knowledge of established procedures to the assembly, testing or calibration of deep sea structures, moorings and research equipment used in support of engineering projects related to oceanographic investigations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES PERFORMED:

Performs non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity, given well-defined objectives and technical advice from a supervisor or engineering staff member. Fabricates and constructs complex components for instrumentation requiring care and accuracy, seeking advice as necessary. Purchases materials and supplies. Interfaces with machine and fabrication shops. Prepares project documentation using graphic, publishing, web, and presentation software. Applies computers to run application programs or to do simple programming tasks.

EDUCATION DESIRED:

Engineering Assistant II: High School or equivalent plus three years' mechanical or electronics experience, or Technical School training plus one year related experience, or one to two years' progress toward an engineering or related degree.

Engineering Assistant III: High School diploma or equivalent plus six years' mechanical or electronics experience, or Technical School training plus four years' practical experience, or two to three years' progress toward an engineering or related degree.

Must be able to obtain TWIC card.

Minimal Sea duty is required.

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to - lifting up to 50lbs unassisted, carrying up to 50lbs unassisted, vision requirements include depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish colors. This is a loud environment with heavy equipment noises/use. Frequent/prolonged standing and/or walking, manual dexterity/mobility, use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, occasional reaching/stooping/bending/kneeling and crouching. Potential for exposure to excessive cold, heat, humidity, dust or other irritants, grease and oils, electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards, high location(s), severe weather conditions.
