Job TitlePostdoctoral Investigator

Description

The Department of Physical Oceanography is seeking a post-doctoral research associate with research interests in surface radiation and air-sea heat fluxes. The candidate would join an ongoing global flux analysis project and should be available to start immediately. This is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.

JOB SUMMARY:

Great improvements have been made in recent decades in developing global fields of ocean turbulent and radiative fluxes, in part due to improved satellite observations. A challenge at hand now is to capitalize the achievements that have been made and to move on to address the balance of the global energy budget. Currently, the ocean turbulent heat fluxes and ocean surface radiative fluxes are developed by different groups. The sum of the two types of products, which provides the estimate of the net heat flux at the sea surface is unbalanced; with the magnitude of the residual approaching 30Wm-2. The large residual has to be addressed before a meaningful assessment of the role of the ocean in global warming and climate change can be established.

Work at WHOI encompasses a diversity of air-sea flux interests including development of multi-decadal global air-sea flux maps, buoy measurements of air-sea fluxes, applications of satellite observations, Arctic surface radiation budget analysis, global water cycle and energy budget study, large-scale atmosphere-ocean interaction, and investigation of climate forcing and feedbacks. The successful candidate will work as part of the team to develop a concerted strategy for a globally balanced net heat flux product through a combined use of in-situ flux buoy measurements and satellite observations.

The appointment is for one year, renewable for a second year subject to approval and availability of funding. Applicants are asked to submit electronically (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a publication list, (3) a 1-2 page research statement, and (4) a list of four references.

Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

EDUCATION DESIRED:

A Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, atmospheric sciences or related field is required.
