Performs underwriting duties to issue decisions within authorized limits for all real estate secured loans including government loans (i.e. FHA, VA, Rural Development), within volume requirements and Bank, regulatory and compliance guidelines.  Performs underwriting tasks associated with correspondent lending.  Provides support and answers to various loan scenarios including review of exceptions to portfolio guidelines.  

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Approves and denies loans within authorized limits for retail and wholesale transactions.  Confirms accuracy of all submitted data and ensures compliance of submitted applications with all established Bank, regulatory and compliance guidelines.  Reviews and evaluates credit reports to determine credit worthiness and calculates debt-to-income ratios to make sound loan decisions in accordance with underwriting guidelines and policy, as well as, in conjunction with automated system (if applicable).  Recommends possible rate/program adjustments to better meet the need of the borrower. Performs additional research as necessary to clarify unusual information and is responsible for deciding if loan application should proceed or be returned for additional documentation.  Effectively communicates with internal staff, loan originator, branch personnel, and applicant to explain the terms of a decision.   40%
  2. Ensures loan decisions are processed within established timeframes by management and in accordance with bank policies and procedures and in compliance with all lending regulations. Underwrites the required number of loan applications daily, as established by management. Effectively communicates with loan applicants, branch personnel and internal staff to explain terms of decision.   40%
  3. Participates in various lender training programs in order to increase proficiency of origination sources and attends all required professional development as required.  Assists the Underwriting Manager in team development, cross training, and special projects as required.  15%
  4. Performs other duties as may be assigned or required.  5%
  5. Ensures compliance with all banking laws, rules, regulations, and prescribed policies/practices/procedures necessary to reduce risk and uphold ethical standards related to and required by one’s duties.
Lending Authority is granted based on lending experience and performance.

  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Some college desirable

  • Minimum 5+ years of real estate secured underwriting experience required
  • General banking/business experience
  • FHA DE Underwriter, VA and Rural Housing experience
