Purpose of the Role:The Director, Investment Banking, is responsible for deepening relationships with top corporate and sovereign clients and proactively engaging in business development to drive growth in the Bank’s loan portfolio, fee income and overall profitability of Corporate & Investment Banking units. The Director leads the planning and implementation of strategies to manage key corporate and sovereign clients in the Bank’s specialist defined sectors, (e.g. sovereign, energy & utilities, renewable energy, project finance and infrastructure) to optimise wallet share whilst ensuring a balance is maintained between business development and risk of the corporate lending portfolio. The Director is also responsible for the structuring and delivery of best-in-class Corporate and Investment Banking products and services to the Bank’s targeted top corporate and sovereign clients, with a focus on the specialist defined sectors.
Key Accountabilities:- Leads the origination and execution of investment banking deals regionally across the Bank’s specialist-defined sectors, delivering superior and consistently structured and executed corporate and sovereign transactions to ensure sustainable revenue and profit contribution via fee generation, NII contribution and loan portfolio growth in a risk-controlled manner.
- Drives specialist-defined sectors, working closely with stakeholders, including MD Investment Banking, Directors, Associate Directors, Associates, Country and Corporate Heads and FDS, proactively engaging in business development and building relationships with key corporate and sovereign clients in the region to identify transaction and ancillary business opportunities with new and existing clients and leverage internal constituents to facilitate seamless execution and cultivate strong relationships with executives of top corporate clients.
- Leads and monitors the senior coverage model, including the relationship planning process, and senior coverage plan for each targeted client, involving agreeing targets, risk appetite, product offering, and opportunity identification to ensure optimal customer coverage and strong client relationships using enhanced investment banking products and services.
- Implements and enhances business performance metrics and business development tools, including the designs and implementation of client facing strategies and tools - cross assets client service plans, product bundling and analytics for each of the markets as required to drive customer profitability, product profitability and enhanced client value and enable the provision of subject matter expert consultancy in regional financial markets to investment banking clients.
- Manages and cultivates strong relationships with client executives and other key decision makers to provide a pipeline flow of good bankable transactions and ensure satisfaction at levels essential to retain and expand the level of business ensuring sustainable revenue, assets and profit contribution.
- Reviews, critiques, sponsors submissions to deals committee and credit committee and other approval committees, as required to ensure consistently high-quality financial analysis, structuring and executive and client engagement, all within the required timeframes.
- Partners and liaises with stakeholders (CRMD, FDS, Corporate Banking, Treasury) while originating and / or executing strategic transactions and sponsoring / assisting other teams with their approvals process to support the growth of key C&IB client relationships and ensure that the Bank is represented as a leading local and regional Bank with capabilities to deliver on a full suite of products and services.
Knowledge / Experience:- Minimum 7 years of experience or equivalent in investment banking, private equity, capital markets and / or large corporate banking, ideally in a regional context.
- Demonstrated results in managing and overseeing deal structuring, documentation, processes, and negotiation.
- Demonstrated results in building client relationship networks.
- Demonstrated team leadership, mentoring and coaching experience and experience in formulating and implementing strategy.
- Exposure to large complex, multi-jurisdictional and multi-party financial arrangements.
- Proven ability to work as part of a cross border / multi-jurisdiction team.
- In-depth understanding of the Corporate & Investment Banking business, financing solutions, credit suite of products, and the set of products available across CIBC.
- Strong understanding of financial options and applicability to various business scenarios.
- Strong knowledge of investment banking products, including syndicated loans and bonds.
- Advanced credit risk analysis skills with strong financial counselling ability.
- Understanding of the industry trends and macro-economic factors affecting customers and markets.
- Expertise in understanding complex financial concepts.
- Excellent industry specific knowledge of the financial and operational metrics and methodologies employed.
- Developed analysis and financial modelling background focused on economic indicators, industry trends and financial statement, balance sheet analysis.
- Excellent understanding of the Caribbean region, economies, industries and businesses.
Required Qualifications:- Master’s degree in business, finance and / or equivalent professional finance or accounting qualifications and experience.
