The Role
We are looking for a Life and Disability Underwriter.

TCS is supporting two clients who have come together to create a new Life insurance joint venture (subject to Central Bank of Ireland authorisation).  This is a new digitally focused greenfield operation, engaged in the business of providing life products in the areas of protection, savings, investments and pre & post retirement.

We are looking for a Life and Disability Underwriter to analyse and underwrite new business under limited direction with specialized knowledge in risk assessment in the medical, financial, occupational and residential area. Life and Disability Underwriters are expected to have in depth knowledge of risk assessment in relation to the processing of life protection applications. A meticulous attention to detail is required with good negotiating skills and the ability to work according to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

To ensure success, underwriters should be analytical and exceptional communicators with brilliant research and classification skills. Top candidates will be experts in risk analysis and selection with remarkable decision-making skills, a deep understanding of retention and reinsurance, and sound judgment.

Your Responsibilities
  • Collect appropriate and accurate information required to assess potential clients and decide on the acceptable risk for approval
  • Calculate possible risk and decide on the premium - how much individuals or organisations should pay for their policy
  • Review customer applications/documentation and details for accuracy and authenticity based on age, medical evidence, occupation, sports and pastimes and residential risk.
  • Prepare reports that detail risk assessment findings that contribute to the final decision.
  • Evaluate documents/details with regards to the company’s underwriting standards.
  • Apply expert judgement when deciding to accept, modify or reject application requests after scrutiny of all the required documents and studies regarding the risk involved.
  • Produce terms and communicate them to advisors and customers.
  • Handle queries from advisors, customers, and medical practitioners.
  • Keep detailed records of policies underwritten and decisions made.
  • Follow applicable legislation and comply with regulatory requirements and company standards.
Experience Required: 
Diploma in Life and Disability Underwriting or Claims would be advantageous. (DLDU/DLDC), Study of Biology in school/college also notable. Revelant experience as an Underwriter in financial services, Meet the Minimum Competency Code of the Central Bank of Ireland, holding or working towards obtaining the QFA modules
  • Degree in finance or business administration
  • Ability to understand and analyse medical, financial, occupational and residential risks.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Thorough knowledge of databases and tracking systems.

  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Possess strong IT, math, and statistical skills.
  • Deep knowledge of underwriting regulations.
