The Center for Children and Technology (CCT) is a research and development center within EDC’s technology portfolio and is based in New York City. CCT conducts basic, applied, and casual and formative research, working in collaboration with educational, corporate, government and research institutions. CCT also designs and develops prototype software and instructional resources that support engaged, active learning.

The Center for Children and Technology in EDC’s US Division has an opening for a Casual Researcher (With Technical Expertise), reporting to the Project Director, in the New York office.

 

EDC’s New York Office (Center for Children and Technology) is seeking a part time, temporary, field researcher to support with setup and implementation of technology for a large-scale study. The study’s focus is to learn about the use of videos, games, and activities in the home. This study may help us identify new ways to help young children improve their learning. This position is ideal for a person seeking experience using technology systems to support and track multimedia-based learning. The individual selected for this role will gain experience with technology setup, technology troubleshooting, back-end data analysis, and other activities related to the research for this project. This position is based in New York City and may include local and national travel to study sites.

 

EDC casual employees generally work as needed. This position will offer about 20 hours/week from September 2019 to June 2020 (the actual hours per week will vary depending on phase of project). A casual position receives statutory benefits of Social Security contributions, Medicare contributions, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and sick leave. A casual position ends when work is complete.

                                                                                                 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.

Under management and guidance, the Casual Researcher provides support to the technology experience efforts, including:

• technology provisioning

• technology delivery logistics

• technology troubleshooting

• data entry and analysis

• maintaining records

• preparing recommendations

 

The Casual Researcher (with Technical Expertise):

Facilitates project teamwork; engages collaboratively in feedback

Leads specific administrative tasks

Assists with quality assurance

Communicates effectively with families participating in the study

Provides logistical support

May coordinate sections of projects

May be expected to travel locally and nationally

 

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; superior organizational skills; the ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal skills. Specific requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree required, MA preferred

• 1–2 years related research, education or administrative coordination, requiring experience with computer applications (including databases) and Internet research

• Availability from September 2019 to June 2020

• Experience provisioning technology devices for research studies

•  Experience troubleshooting technology

• Experience with families of young children

• Experience with data entry

• Interest in researching children’s media

 

The Casual Researcher (with Technical Expertise) will work about 20 hours a week for about 10 months. Flexible scheduling is available, but the hire would have to be available within regular work hours (9am – 5pm), as well as some weekends during data collection periods. It is possible that it will be more than 20 hours some weeks (e.g., Sept – Oct and Jan – Mar) and then less than 20 hours per week the remaining time.

 

Compensation: $25 - $28
