Trainee Programme Overview

The Investment20/20 Trainee Programme at GAM is aimed at both school/college leavers as well as graduates. The purpose is to enable individuals with limited or no exposure to financial services to start their careers in the investment management industry and gain the skills and experience required to progress their careers within the industry.

This Investment20/20 Trainee Scheme at GAM will be for a fixed term of 12 months and the salary will be £20,000 per annum. Trainees will also receive a bonus of £2,000 on starting with GAM to assist with expenses, travel etc. Trainees will also be eligible for a number of Company benefits, in addition to having the opportunity to get involved with the Sports and Social Club activities. Upon successful completion of the Trainee Programme, all Trainees will be eligible to be considered for a discretionary additional payment of up to £1,000.

All Trainees will be part of the wider Investment20/20 community with the opportunity to build relationships with Trainees outside of GAM through both social and professional events. Trainees will receive extensive ‘on the job’ training by being assigned to a specific department for the duration of the 12 month contract. Individuals will be assigned a mentor for the duration of the Programme and will gain exposure to the different teams within the department and have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of tasks and projects.

As well as Investment20/20 centrally organised learning and development opportunities and additional training organised by our in-house Learning & Development Department, Trainees will be given the opportunity to start an industry recognised professional qualification. Individuals will be provided with training and experience to deliver a presentation and gain exposure to public speaking as part of the Trainee Scheme.

Department overview 

Cantab, now an integral part of GAM Systematic, is a 10+ year old successful quantitative investment team based in Cambridge.  We apply statistical and mathematical methods to a wide variety of financial markets to generate returns and manage assets for some of the most sophisticated investors worldwide.   The team and offering has been growing steadily since its launch in 2006 and now the investment team is 30+ people at our Research & Development centre in Cambridge and GAM employs in total over 1000 people worldwide.

The Legal & Compliance Department is a global resource with approximately 50 professionals covering United Kingdom, United States, Continental Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The objective of the Compliance Department is to protect GAM, its clients and staff by managing Compliance risk. Compliance risk is the risk of legal sanctions, reputational loss and material financial loss an organisation faces when it fails to comply with laws and regulations. This objective is pursued through the development of policies, procedures and controls that are reasonably designed to prevent, detect and correct violations of applicable law in general and of securities laws in particular. The Compliance Department assists GAM in complying with its regulatory obligations through interpretation of regulations, advising on regulatory issues, providing training and monitoring business activity.

Main Duties & Responsibilities


Under the supervision of qualified solicitors, you will assist the legal function on the legal, regulatory and commercial issues affecting the business, including:

  • providing legal and administrative support to the Legal team members responsible for negotiating trading documentation (eg. ISDAs which are regularly used to govern over-the-counter derivatives transactions) and client facing documentation (eg. Investment Management Agreements) and liaising with different business divisions (eg. Operations, Trading, Marketing) as necessary;
  • contributing to ongoing projects, such as regulatory projects including MiFID 2;
  • undertaking research (i.e. to find information on new and existing regulations, legal cases and articles);
  • assisting in the update of template documentation; and
  • assisting in the negotiation of confidentiality agreements, terms of engagement and other ancillary documentation


The Compliance function reviews and responds to queries from the business as well as providing interpretations of regulations. The Compliance department is responsible for keeping abreast of regulatory developments and works closely with the business to ensure policies and procedures and systems and controls are in place to meet new and existing regulatory requirements.   Duties of the department include:

  • Undertake monitoring reviews in accordance with the Compliance Monitoring Plan
  • Test and review the controls in place to ensure that the business is acting in accordance with procedures and regulatory obligations
  • Review marketing materials to ensure that financial promotions are clear, fair and not misleading
  • Ensure members of staff have been provided with sufficient training to meet their regulatory obligations
  • Co-ordinate face-to-face training as well as online training modules on topics such as Market Abuse, Anti-Money Laundering, Data Protection and Anti-Bribery and Corruption.


The Risk function is responsible in continuous development of the approved risk management framework and reviews all qualitative & quantitative risks associated with the business. You will assist with the duties of the department which include:

  • Reviewing and presenting findings to the Risk Committee
  • Monthly review of risk reports and ensuring adherence to obligations and limits
  • Ensuring processes and procedures are formalised and up-to-date
