Electrical Design Engineer - UK Rail Division, Kent

The Design Engineer reports to the Design Manager and assists in the production of design packages on a range of projects within the railway environment, working on multi-team/ external designs, for both ourselves and direct for the client you will produce design packages for:
  • Lighting (buildings, walkways, railway sidings and stations)
  • LV power distribution (rail environment)
  • EV installations
  • Building Services (M&E) within the built environment and railway environment
Principle Responsibilities
  • Producing accurate design packages using Auto CAD/ micro-station software, lighting design software (Relux/Dialux) and electrical design software (Trimble Amtec)
  • Interpreting client requirements and apply appropriate techniques to achieve suitable design outputs.
  • Perform electrical calculations, lighting calculations and coordinated building services design drawings compliant to British standards, Network Rail standards, Building Regulations and other relevant standards.
  • Prepare and produce design drawings, specifications, risk assessments and client information relevant for submission to client.
  • Consideration/ application of sustainable design solutions where applicable.
  • Carrying out site surveys both in a rail environment and ‘’high street’’ environment and preparing reports and documentation.
  • Keep updated on industry trends and best practices.
Personnel Specification
  • Proven Knowledge of engineering design software and equipment.
  • Proficient in Auto CAD/ Micro-station.
  • Ability to design electrical systems to client requirements working alongside senior engineers.
  • Excellent analytical skills and strong mathematical skills.
  • Good written and communication skills.
  • Ability to write technical reports and documentation (Form A/B Designs for railway environments).
  • Previous experience producing survey reports for submission to clients.
  • Thorough understanding of Project Risks Mitigations and Electrical Health and Safety issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure and restraints, whilst paying thorough attention to detail.
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably requested by the Directors.
  • Be aware of and comply with appropriate systems and working practices that ensure compliance with all relevant statutory regulations and recognised best practice.
  • Communicate with customers, staff and other stakeholders in a helpful and efficient manner.
  • Work independently but also as part of a team to assist other members of staff when required.
  • Respect the confidentiality of information received and adherence to GDPR.
  • Take responsible care for the health and safety of yourself and other people who may be affected by what you do or do not do at work.
  • Use all equipment in accordance with your training and instruction and report to the Design Manager any defects in plant, equipment or premises that could present a risk to health and safety.

Experience
Essential: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in electrical design engineering within the Building Services Industry/ Rail environment.
Design experience on projects from £20k - £2M.
Desirable: Experience in installation and maintenance of electrical systems/ Building Services.

Qualifications
Essential: An engineering degree or equivalent industry recognised qualification in Electrical Engineering/Building Services.
Desirable: Memebers of The Institution of Engineering and Technology/Chartered institution of Building Services Engineers. Auto CAD Qualification or Formal Training. Technical Courses: EV, PV, Lighting design, CDM. 

Knowledge
Essential: Knowledge of Electrical standards and British Standards. A working knowledge of rail engineering environment and adequate understanding of other relevant disciplines within this environment.
Desirable: Knowledge of BS7671 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations. Knowledge of ISO9001, 18001 & 45001 and requirements of the design role. Network Rail standards

IT Skills
Essential:Excellent use of MS Office; Outlook, Word, Excel and databases.
Desirable: Familiarity with other information management systems. 

Other Skills
Essential: Strong evaluation and decision-making skills and assist senior engineers in managing projects.
Desirable: Working as part of small/medium team of designers and project managers. Researching new products and technologies. Value Engineering to reduce cost or meet client’s budget.

Personal Qualities
Essential: Good organisational skills and teamwork. 
Desirable: An appreciation of railway engineering infrastructure.
