Facilities

The Facilities Department is currently searching for a Senior Carpenter to join their team. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Carpenter Shop Supervisor, the Senior Carpenter performs a multitude of carpentry tasks from start to finish, often coordinating jobs with other skilled labor (plumbers, electricians, HVAC).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs all duties of Carpenter with additional responsibilities involved with managing and supervising major projects (blueprint reading required).
  • Assists supervisor in determining work assignments and allocating resources. May lead or direct the activities of other Carpenters.
  • When required, may assume supervisor's duties.
  • Works with table saws, band saws, radial arm saws, panel saw, drill press, planer, joiner, sanders, electric hand tools, carpenter's hand tools, metal cutting saws, shears, benders, fork lift, crane car, personal lifts.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

As deemed necessary by supervisor

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High school or vocational school plus 2 years training school or apprenticeship in carpentry; 10 years’ experience including 5 years of finish carpentry experience. Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to direct the work of others and provide training. Ability to read blueprints required. Valid driver's license and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Massachusetts drivers license required. 
  • TWIC required upon hiring. 
  • Position drives WHOI Vehicles.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical duties for this position, include but are not limited, to lifting above the shoulder up to 25-50 lbs independently 10 times per day, carrying up to 50 lbs independently, up to 10 time per day. Visual abilities of depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors, peripheral vision, as well as near and far vision. Hearing requirements include ability to hear and respond to instructions in a noisy shop environment as well as talk. Must be able to work around and with others, as well as work independently. Other physical tasks may include prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking, use of hands for basic/fine grasping/manipulation, reaching (above/below the shoulders), stooping, bending, kneeling, twisting, pushing and pulling; ability to climb ladders & stools. May be exposed to excessive cold, heat, and/or humidity, dust or other irritants, electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards, high location, severe weather conditions; odorous chemicals or specimens. Physical duties are subject to change.
