Information Systems

The Information Systems department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is looking for a full-time network engineer with a strong telecommunications background to join the Network Team. This position is eligible for benefits.
This person will assume primary responsibility for the operation, performance, and availability of all telecommunications services throughout the institution; and will work with other team members to design, implement, and support WHOI’s telecommunications and networking infrastructure.  This person will additionally support the WHOI local and wide-area network and its related services.                           
This person will work closely with scientists and researchers, advising and assisting them with their networking and communication needs.  Provides high level customer service, with demonstrated ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical users.
  • Work with and provide network and communications support to scientific users, researchers, and administrative staff.
  • Assist with the management of the Institution’s local and wide area network.
  • Install, configure, and monitor networking and telecommunications equipment and services.
  • Respond to, troubleshoot, and address network and communications issues in a professional and timely manner.
  • Document and level-set understanding and operation of network and communications equipment, configuration, management, and support processes with network team and IS organization.
  • Maintain technical proficiency by participating in educational opportunities, training and reading relevant technical publications.
  • Design and implement processes to ensure high availability of network and communication systems and services.
  • Performs related duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.
  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent combination of skills/experience.
  • 8+ years of experience supporting a large, networked computing environment.
  • Cisco Voice and CCNA certification or greater.
  • Strong understanding of all aspects of phone and network systems; including OSPF, BGP, IOS, VoIP, SIP trunking, QoS, and preferably CUCM and Asterisk experience.
  • High level of customer focus and service orientation.
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to carrying under 10 lbs; hear and respond to instructions, work with others, alone and around others. Other physical tasks include occasional standing/walking; mostly sedentary, use of hands for basic /fine grasping/manipulation. Physical duties are subject to change.
