The Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department is currently searching for a Cyberinfrastructure Lead - Ocean Observatory Initiative to join their team. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.  

JOB SUMMARY

The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Lead (OCL) is responsible for directing the maintenance, support, security and operation of all OOI software and computing hardware infrastructure, including the uFrame-based OOI Data System and Marine Operator Systems, for the cabled and uncabled arrays.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under the direction of the OOI Program Manager, the OCL is responsible for implementing the CI technological solution for the OOI cabled and uncabled arrays to accomplish the OOI’s goals and missions.
  • Provide overall OOI CI operational and managerial leadership, including setting priorities, managing teams, and developing and reporting on OOI CI performance metrics. The leadership of the OOI Data Portal system development and maintenance shall be conducted through close coordination with the RCA, EA and Coastal Global Scale Nodes (CGSN) IOs.
  • Responsible for the uninterrupted availability, QA/QC, delivery, archiving, and security of all cabled and uncabled OOI Science and Engineering Data. Oversee all OOI CI hardware and software, develop and execute short and long term strategies and planning for the OOI technological needs, create innovative and cost effective solutions to complex problems, and research and apply current and emerging technologies as appropriate.
  • Deliver industry standard documentation for the OOI CI.
  • Maintain OOI CI software and system licenses, as required.
  • Represent the OOI Cyberinfrastructure in various forums engaging stakeholders, scientists and sponsor groups for dissemination of information and gathering of feedback on the OOI CI data system.
  • Responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the CI Asset Management system.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated highly effective software organization, management and project management skills, with a proven track record as an effective leader of large software projects. Extremely strong managerial and demonstrated leadership experience with ability to work independently, take initiative, exercise good judgment, successfully prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with leading the development, implementation, and deployment of an organizational cyberinfrastructure vision designed to meet the diverse needs of the science and engineering research and education communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and manage medium to large (>$4M), complex cyberinfrastructure projects.
  • Proven experience in designing and managing large-scale data systems, including high performance computing, and data management systems, supporting science and management users at an enterprise level. Demonstrated background in earth science data management and delivery is desired.
  • Advanced analytical skills in the areas of resource management, technical leadership, and preparation and management of budgets.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, to understand user needs, to anticipate technological trends, and to translate that thinking into recommendations.
  • Master’s Degree, or equivalent professional experience, in computing and/or computational science and engineering fields.
  • Knowledge of Federal, academic and industrial research and education initiatives focused on state-of-the-art computing and cyberinfrastructure exploration, development, acquisition and provision.
  • Skill in recognizing, developing and implementing approaches and programs, which build on the expertise and knowledge of researchers and educators in multiple disciplines to develop solutions to important cutting-edge research and education problems.
  • Experience developing or managing large, open source software projects, including experience making decisions on proper copyrighting, licensing, and version controlling of such software projects.
  • Experience with an array of programming languages and tools, developing large Data Management software systems, basic server maintenance, widely-used data storage formats, and managing Agile software development teams.

This hire is contingent upon award. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, occasional standing/walking, this position is mostly sedentary by nature. Visual abilities to include near vision. Other occupational requirements include hearing, talking, working with others and traveling about 10% of the time. Physical duties are subject to change.
