Scientific and Postdoctoral

The Department of Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites exceptional candidates to apply to one or more of our full-time exempt tenure track positions on our scientific staff.  We seek to hire at the Assistant Scientist level; however, extraordinary candidates may be considered at Associate Scientist without Tenure, Associate Scientist with Tenure, or Senior Scientist levels.  The successful candidate will initiate new and expand existing programs in the broad area of oceanographic sensors and sensing systems. Areas of interest include but are not restricted to::
  • Development of novel in-situ biological, chemical and physical sensors
  • Automated analysis and adaptive sensing methods
  • Advanced remote sensing technologies
An ideal candidate will have demonstrated research experience in marine environments or challenging atmospheric, terrestrial or space environments. WHOI operates two sea-going vessels and a coastal research vessel, in addition to a variety of moored, towed, remotely operated, and autonomous platforms and vehicles. Its facilities support rapid prototyping, testing and deployment of new instrumentation.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree, postdoctoral experience, and a record of scientific research publications in scholarly journals. WHOI scientific staff members are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program. They have the opportunity to advise graduate students and teach courses in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering ( Opportunities for interdisciplinary research exist through collaboration with the other science departments (Biology, Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Physical Oceanography; see, as well as with researchers in the broader Woods Hole scientific community. Members of WHOI’s Scientific Staff are expected to provide for their salaries and research budgets from grants and contracts, but the Institution provides salary support when no other funding is available, as well as significant internal funding for developing innovative research topics. Candidates hired at the junior level will receive an initial appointment for four years with salary guaranteed. Female and minority applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.
